It’s time we had a little chat about laundry
As a style blogger, clothes constitute a very significant part of my life. Be it shoots, parties or just another day at work, my life is surrounded by different texture, colours, patterns and materials.
While wearing and flaunting my style in my own, individualistic way can be quite thrilling, the major problem I face is the upkeep of it. When it comes to taking care of the diversity that dwells within my closet, I have to be very careful of what laundry technique I use, one mistake and I might as well kiss my favourite shirt goodbye.
To make this process simple for everyone, here’s my laundry 101 for my top 4 materials.
Linen – relatively easier to take care of, a lukewarm hand wash or machine wash is the best way to go about looking after this beauty. A quick iron when damp is perfectly acceptable if the garment is excessively creased, but with modern linen-blends this will rarely be the case.
Silk – this one is delicate! Mostly with silk, it is a ‘dry clean wash’ and it is best we abide by this rule. While you can pass off washing silk at home with warm water and mild detergent, the best way to go about laundering this material is through a professional.
Wool – should be hand-washed in tepid water to avoid shrinking and dried flat, not wrung out. Putting woollen products in the machine can sometime spell D-I-S-A-S-T-E-R!
Suede – one of the most coveted materials in the fashion world, Suede is high maintenance to say the least. Upkeep takes a lot of effort and while it can be done at home, it is best to give it to a professional as it requires regular cleaning, brushing a lot of TLC!
A few other pointers to keep in mind while laundering your clothes:
- Always empty your pockets
- Less is more, keep a control over the amount of detergent you use
- Hot water shrinks clothes, use it wisely
- Separate your lights from your darks
